Cyber Security Penetration testers (White Hats) will tell you most networks are compromised because of the most common, textbook vulnerabilities. These are not sophisticated hacks requiring deep infiltration or next-gen exploit code. Most are exploited through what is known in the industry as “low hanging fruit”.
An experienced White Hat over the course of their career will test clients ranging from small, medium to large. Yet, despite the unique nature of each client network, they all share a common vulnerability. The “lack of basic hardening” and seldom always following best practices.
In over 90% of networks simple mitigation steps make the difference between ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’, yet Windows Hardening, and simple best practices are not being enforced. When examined in more detail and broken down to their most fundamental components, the following vulnerabilities contribute most often:
- Weak or common passwords
- Default passwords
- Excessive privileges
- Weak file share permissions
- Legacy protocol support
- Poor configuration
- Lack of Multifactor Authentication
